Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the new hot topic in marketing and sales and it should be. With it, clients have the potential to lift their web site to the top of the major search engines result pages for their respective keywords. And this reference and site feed is free - well, almost free!

Search Engine Optimization is the use of a combination of site structure and content organization to help make a web site more Search Engine friendly. Search Engine friendly means making a site it more easily read when visited by Search Engine bots & spiders.

Bots & Spiders

Bots & spiders?...don't call the exterminator quite yet. Although they are not exactly what you would think is going to help new customers find your company on the internet, they are the unsung heroes to any company that is looking to drive traffic to their web site.

These programs are written with a set of rules that they follow as they spread out over the internet to read through web pages and index them. And like human workers, they can get a little testy when you make them work harder than they need to.

Search Engine Optimization looks to make the structure of the site something familiar and useful to Search Engine spiders and bots. The easier it is for them to find the content of the site, the faster they can read through you site's content and subsequently rank it's relevance to the keywords being searched.

And, although they may be small and have a lot of work to do, they are very attentive and quite intelligent. They know the difference between the Prime Rib of relevance and the Spam that some sites attempt to serve up and call Prime Rib. Meaning? You can try to fool the Search Engines, but it is a better use of time to understand what they want and produce that structure and content.

Keywords

The tricky thing that faces all companies that are dependent upon driving traffic from search engines is the movement from focus upon the presence of keywords within the content on the site to the perceived relevance of the sites content as judged by the number of unpaid links to it.

This movement has been snowballing to the point where some believe that keywords are irrelative. We don't think so, since it is still the only way to know what is on a particular page.
